The Final Blog of the Term: Kim's Convenience & Columbus

Closing off a wonderful term of various pieces of media we watched two different things which were Kim's Convenience and Columbus.  Both films are slightly similar in that they both feature themes of family, but both are unique in their own regard.

Columbus was a film that I wasn't really looking forward to but I ended up enjoying it a lot.  One of things I wonder about this film as the process of selecting a location.  The architecture in this movie I felt were the true stars of the film.  The usage of the buildings as a backdrop was fit for the certain scene.  An example is how they might use windows or glass and how they interfere with dialog.  I wonder what this film would have been like if located in a different city.  One thing discussed in class that I feel is important was the accessibility of this movie. I feel like this movie isn't something that can be appreciated by everyone.  It is certainly a more film buff movie and it takes a certain passion of film to truly appreciate it I think.  But I also appreciate this kinds of movies, because when A movie like this wants to do something unique like with architecture, it does it well and is just that much more special as someone who likes film.  Perhaps an opinion I share on my own is that I thought it was a very relaxing movie.  I know the movie is about relationships but self development, but I never really felt nervous or tense at all during the movie. Overall, I really enjoyed the film, and I really appreciate the uniqueness of the backdrop and usage of buildings.  

Next we watched something different from Columbus and that show is Kim's Convenience.  I really liked the overall setting of the show in the little convenience store that the family owns.  The interactions with customers is something I never really see on other sitcoms and its a new way to develop characters I feel.  I enjoyed the interactions the family had with each other, even with the parents being pretty strict with the kids.  It is a shame that this show is being cancelled, as I would love to see more of this show and see it get the ending it deserves.

    I think interesting your comment about how you felt tense while watching Columbus. Have you figured out why? I felt the same way and I while I was thinking about I came to the conclusion that perhaps it is because of internal turmoil that both of the protagonist are going through. Is interesting that everything in their minds appears to be so chaotic and confusing but the cinematography and the sound of the movie do not follow that trend (it is like the opposite of chaotic and tense). -Valeria

[FIST 325] Shot On iPhone: Tangerine

 I'm not really sure I have too much to say about this film so this might be a short blog post.  I think one thing I really appreciate about this film is the production and that it was shot on phones.  It gives it a sort of documentary feel but also feels genuine at the same time.  With documentaries there's always the problem of people acting differently with a camera facing them.  That obviously doesn't happen here because it is scripted so it seemed genuine since you get the feeling that your just tagging along for the ride..  I also really enjoyed how much the soundtrack was able to contribute to this film. I felt that this film had a weird sense of character development and how it draws the viewer in.  Since the viewer seems to be following the girl on their journey its easy to get connected with them and get interested in their story and root for them.  It seems weird that these girls or going for Chester after he doesn't seem that great....

[FIST 325] Bad Hair - Pelo Malo

Pelo Malo is an interesting look into the world of Venezuelan culture.  I think that the use of Junior's hair as the plot point through throughout the film is an interesting way to explore his culture but also what Junior wants to be.  Junior tries many different ways to straiten his hair much to his mother's disapproval and this creates lots of tension within the Junior and his mother.  The thing I want to discuss in this blog is how that tension was used in the film.  The movie itself can be hard to watch at times because you feel bad for junior unable to find the support he wants and the hostility between him and his mother adds to this.  But there are also times in the film where these moments of tensions can create some beautify done scenes.  The scene I want to use as an example is the scene we watched in class where junior cuts his hair.  This is obviously a very hostile moment between Junior and his mother and this is evident in the stares they...

 Last term I took FIST 402 and K-Pop was something that if I remember correctly we lightly touched on, so I am glad we got to spend more time on it this week.  I am honestly not sure what my opinions are of K-Pop.  I think that all songs that I have listened to are catchy, but it isn't really something I am interested in.  I know many people that are interested in the genre, and I can understand the appeal, but it just maybe isn't for me.  I am by no means saying it is terrible, I do think it is good, I'm just not the audience for it.   I feel like every single year K-pop along with other mediums of entertainment have only gotten more popular.  K-pop as evolved so much that I find it interesting to compare a boy band like One Direction to that of BTS.  I think the mass popularity of K-pop is said best in Yoon's article when he says, “Media studies scholars have recently defined the phenomenal rise of K-pop as ‘a way to counter the t...
